South African Police Service (SAPS) officers, working alongside key law enforcement partners, have seized 95kg of cocaine with an estimated street value of R28 million at OR Tambo International Airport.
The intelligence-driven operation was carried out on Friday after SAPS Crime Intelligence’s Border Integrity Unit received information about a suspected drug shipment.
Police said members of the SAPS Visible Policing Unit at OR Tambo, together with Customs officials and Menzies Aviation operational staff, intercepted the cargo shortly after it arrived on a flight from São Paulo, Brazil, at around 1pm.
The cocaine was discovered in the cargo section of the airport and immediately confiscated.
No arrests have been made, and investigations are continuing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attempted smuggling operation.
SAPS said it remains committed to disrupting organised crime syndicates involved in drug trafficking and will continue working with law enforcement partners to safeguard South Africa’s borders and ports of entry from criminal exploitation.
