South Africans have rallied behind kwaito star L’vovo Derrango, with donations exceeding R226,000 after his emotional appearance on Gagasi FM touched the hearts of fans and fellow artists.
The Bayangisukela hitmaker, whose real name is Mthokozisi Khathi, broke down in tears during an interview on Sunday Devotion with Linda Sibiya as he reflected on his recovery from the stroke he suffered in 2022 and the loved ones he has lost.
His heartfelt interview sparked an outpouring of support, with a bank statement shared by X user @Ndi_Muvenda on Tuesday showing donations had reached R226,398.92.
Among the biggest contributors were maskandi star Khuzani, who donated R20,000, and music producer DJ Tira, who contributed R10,000. Fans from across the country also made contributions ranging from R5 to R30,000, helping ease the financial burden of L’vovo’s ongoing physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
In a statement shared on social media, L’vovo expressed his gratitude to everyone who had supported him.
“I have received donations from many people who simply wanted to help. I want to assure everyone that every contribution will go directly toward my physiotherapy, rehabilitation and recovery.”
The kwaito veteran said surviving a stroke had given him a new perspective on life.
“Surviving my stroke has changed the way I look at life. It has taught me that my story is bigger than music alone.”
L’vovo is expected to share more about his recovery journey in the upcoming Mzansi Magic medical series, Doctor’s Room, where he will speak about the physical and emotional challenges he has faced since suffering the life-altering stroke.
