Former SAPS clerk jailed for fake jobs and liquor licence scam

The Lejweleputswa Regional Court in Welkom has sentenced former SAPS administrative clerk Pitso Miya to 15 years’ imprisonment for corruption and accepting gratification.

Miya, who worked at Welkom Police Station, falsely claimed he could secure liquor licences and SAPS jobs in exchange for money. After one victim reported him, police appealed for other victims to come forward, leading to eight criminal cases being opened.

Investigators found that Miya defrauded victims between January and August 2024 before resigning from the police service.

He was convicted of corruption and sentenced to 15 years in prison, with eight years suspended on condition that he is not convicted of corruption during the suspension period.
