Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi is expected to appear in court on Monday, 20 July 2026, after being arrested in connection with the alleged theft of precious stones valued at R14.9 million.
Mkhanazi was arrested on Friday, 17 July 2026, following an investigation into an alleged fake police raid at an apartment in Killarney, Johannesburg, where precious stones worth millions of rand were reportedly stolen.
Authorities allege that the raid was carried out by individuals posing as law enforcement officers before fleeing with the valuables. Investigators believe Mkhanazi was involved in the operation, making him one of the highest-ranking law enforcement officials to face allegations linked to the case.
