Malusi Gigaba back in court in Transnet corruption case

Former Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba is back in the Johannesburg High Court on Friday alongside his four co-accused as pre-trial proceedings continue in the multi-billion-rand Transnet locomotive procurement corruption case.

Gigaba is appearing alongside former Transnet Group Chief Executive Brian Molefe, former Group Chief Executive Siyabonga Gama, former Group Chief Financial Officer Anoj Singh and former Chief Procurement Officer Thamsanqa Jiyane.

The five accused face corruption charges linked to Transnet’s multi-billion-rand locomotive procurement programme, which was intended to expand and modernise South Africa’s rail network. The State alleges that tender processes were manipulated and three locomotive contracts were irregularly awarded, resulting in losses of billions of rand to the state-owned entity.

The alleged offences were committed between November 2010 and May 2014 during Gigaba’s tenure as Minister of Public Enterprises. All five accused have denied the allegations.
