Aden McCarthy set for UEFA Champions League opportunity with Sabah FK

Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy is reportedly close to securing a move to Azerbaijani champions Sabah FK, a transfer that could see him feature in the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League qualifiers.

According to reports, the 23-year-old is set to sign a three-year contract with an option to extend for a further year. Sabah FK recently won the Azerbaijan Premier League title and will compete in the first qualifying round of Europe’s premier club competition next season.

McCarthy enjoyed a strong campaign for Amakhosi, making 2,399 appearances minutes across all competitions and missing only seven league matches. His versatility at left-back and centre-back helped Chiefs secure a third-place finish and qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup.

The son of former Kaizer Chiefs defender Fabian McCarthy, he would join a growing Sabah FK side that includes Aaron Malouda, son of former Chelsea and France star Florent Malouda.

Despite his impressive club form, McCarthy has reportedly been overlooked for Bafana Bafana’s squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. National team coach Hugo Broos instead selected Chiefs teammate Bradley Cross, citing tactical considerations and squad balance.

A move to Europe could provide McCarthy with a new platform to showcase his abilities and strengthen his case for future national team selection.
