The Democratic Alliance (DA) has opened a criminal case against former Ekurhuleni City Manager, Imogen Mashazi, over allegations of corruption and tender irregularities linked to municipal contracts.
The charges were laid at the Germiston Police Station on Monday by the DA’s Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate, Khathutshelo Rasilingwane, following media reports that linked Mashazi to a luxury trip to London allegedly funded by a company that held contracts with the City of Ekurhuleni.
According to the DA, Mashazi allegedly accepted a chartered flight to London in 2022 worth millions of rands without declaring the benefit. The party claims the trip was financed by XET Solutions, a company that had active tenders with the municipality at the time.
The DA argues that the allegations raise serious concerns about possible violations of municipal procurement regulations, the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA), the Municipal Systems Act and anti-corruption legislation. The party has called for a full criminal investigation into the matter.
Rasilingwane said the allegations point to a broader pattern of corruption and maladministration within the metro, adding that public officials must be held accountable for any abuse of power or misuse of public resources.
Mashazi has previously denied wrongdoing and has maintained that municipal funds were not used to finance the London trip. However, the DA says the latest reports warrant a thorough investigation by law enforcement authorities.
