Police in Mthatha are investigating two separate inquest cases following the deaths of two Walter Sisulu University students in incidents that occurred in Haven Hills, KuGompo City, and Mthatha over the past weekend.
The first incident was reported on Sunday, 31 May 2026, at approximately 13:00 at Calypso Gardens in Haven Hills. According to police, a 22-year-old female student was allegedly preparing food wrapped in aluminium foil in a microwave when the appliance exploded, causing a fire.
The student sustained burn injuries and is believed to have died from smoke inhalation. An inquest docket has been opened, and investigations are continuing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a separate incident, a 19-year-old male student was found dead at Chris Hani Park in Mthatha on Saturday, 30 May 2026, at about 02:00.
Police said it is alleged that the student was walking home from a local tavern when he slipped on wet ground and fell onto a bottle he was carrying. The bottle reportedly broke, causing a deep wound to his thigh. He is believed to have bled to death as a result of the injury.
An inquest docket has been registered at Mthatha Central Police Station, and investigators are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death.
Police confirmed that both matters remain under investigation. Post-mortem examinations will be conducted to determine the exact causes of death.
