Murder suspect Mzubanzi Chulayo has told the Athlone court that he will represent himself. Chulayo and his co-accused Mziyandi Mdlungu, Zukile Tshabile, Thobani Maxengane are accused of killing activist Loyiso Nkohla in April at Phillipi.
Nkohla was shot dead near Philippi railway station l lsdy yrsr.
Three other people were wounded,including his wetssmnsra pregnant woman. and firmer councillor Thembinkosi Pupz
Maxengane who is believed to have been thema stermind behind the killing was found dead in police in holding cells.
The killers also shot and wounded three other people, including a pregnant woman and former councillor Thembinkosi Pu
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said: “Chulayo’s case was postponed to Friday and transferred to the Athlone Magistrate’s Court. Tshabile did not appear in court as his case has been postponed until February but all accused will be joined together at a later stage.
“Advocate John Reyneveld told the court that Chulayo was linked to the case in that he, Thobani Maxengana and others were part of a planning meeting to kill Loyiso and his wife, Nyameka.
“He was identified as one of the shooters during an identification parade. Cellphone mapping also placed him at the crime scene and in his warning statement taken down by a captain within the SAPS, he admitted to be part of the planning. He was in possession of a firearm, places himself at the crime scene but denies being a shooter.
“He also confirms that he was paid R20000 for the murder. Chulayo told the court that he will hire a private lawyer while Mdlungu, who was expected to apply for bail, told the court that he will speak for himself after his lawyer withdrew due to financial instructions.”
The case was postponed until December 11 for Chulayo to organise his legal representation.
“The magistrate also told Mdlungu, if he changes his mind and decides to hire a private lawyer, he must make sure that that lawyer is in court at the next appearance.”
