SAWS issues severe thunderstorm warnings ahead of special voting

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued multiple weather warnings for severe thunderstorms in several provinces as special voting gets underway ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.

A Yellow Level 4 warning has been issued for parts of Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal, with thunderstorms expected to bring heavy downpours, hail and excessive lightning.

The conditions could result in flooding and damage to infrastructure and settlements.

A Yellow Level 2 warning is also in place along the KwaZulu-Natal coast and adjacent interior between Port Edward and Mtubatuba, where strong gusty winds, heavy rain, hail and lightning are expected.

Meanwhile, a Yellow Level 1 warning has been issued for parts of the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

The storms could cause localised flooding, damage to property and temporary structures, as well as disruptions to electricity supply and communications.

The warnings come as the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) prepares to administer special voting on Monday, 2 November, and Tuesday, 3 November, ahead of the main voting day on Wednesday, 4 November.

The IEC has urged voters to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions when travelling to voting stations or awaiting home visits by electoral officials.
