Orange Level 6 snow warning issued for parts of Eastern Cape

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an Orange Level 6 warning for disruptive snow in parts of the Eastern Cape as South Africa braces for very cold, wet and windy winter conditions.

The warning covers Emalahleni, Sakhisizwe, Senqu, Elundini and Matatiele, where heavy snow could disrupt livelihoods, cause major traffic disruptions and temporarily leave some communities inaccessible.

A Yellow Level 2 warning for disruptive snow is also in place for parts of the Eastern Cape, Free State and western KwaZulu-Natal.

SAWS has further warned of disruptive rain in Mpumalanga, damaging winds and waves along the KwaZulu-Natal coast, and strong winds in parts of the Western and Northern Cape.

Snowfalls are possible over mountainous areas, while rough seas are expected along the coast.

The weather service has urged the public and farmers to take necessary precautions.
