The Matatiele Local Municipality is set to interview 20 shortlisted candidates for the position of Municipal Manager next week, following the resignation of former manager Lizo Matiwane in January.
Acting Municipal Manager Nokhanyo Zembe could not disclose the number of applicants for the position, but the master list seen by The Informer reveal that 20 candidates have been shortlisted. She said The interview process is scheduled to take place over two days, on April 22 and 23, 2026.
Political stakeholders have weighed in on the qualities they expect from the incoming municipal manager.
ANC Regional Secretary Polelo Mohale emphasized the need for a qualified individual who understands the diverse needs of the Matatiele community and can bring stability to the municipality.
“We would prefer a qualified individual, but more importantly someone who can serve the people and stabilise the municipality,” Mohale said.
Meanwhile, DA councillor Wonga Potwana stated that the municipality needs a manager with the courage to confront corruption.
“We want someone who has the guts to fight corruption within the municipality,” said Potwana.
EFF councillor Skhafungana painted a bleak picture of the current state of affairs, describing the municipality as being in a state of collapse. He stressed the need for strong leadership to restore its functionality.
“We need a candidate who will drive the municipality back to its former glory, not one who will simply follow political instructions,” he said
