Two Democratic Alliance (DA) members currently facing fraud charges have been elected to key leadership positions in the party’s Alfred Nzo regional structure.
Rose Nkungu from Matatiele has been chosen as the Fundraising Chair, while Anele Mayise from KwaBhaca was elected as the Finance Chairperson during the regional congress held over the weekend. Both are facing fraud charges in separate courts in the Eastern Cape.
Nkungu is accused of selling a property to a Cape Town woman while allegedly misrepresenting herself as the rightful owner. Her case is being heard at the Commercial Crimes Court in Mthatha. Mayise, on the other hand, is facing a fraud case related to the Road Accident Fund (RAF) in the Mthatha High Court.
Speaking to The Informer, both Nkungu and Mayise acknowledged the charges but emphasised that they have not been convicted.
“Delegates requested me to stand for the position, and I could not say no. You are innocent until proven guilty — that is the policy of the DA,” said Mayise.
Nkungu added that the DA does not operate under a “step-aside” policy.
DA Eastern Cape Provincial Leader Andrew Whitfield echoed their sentiments, affirming that the pair remains eligible to serve.
“The DA cannot presume guilt until proven guilty. Any member found guilty of an offence will be subjected to a disciplinary process, and their membership may be terminated. We are a party that upholds due process and the rule of law,” Whitfield said.
The congress also elected Mnikelo Gwayi as Regional Chairperson, Tselana Mohatla as Secretary, and Nkuthalo Kekeni as Deputy Chairperson. Whitfield expressed confidence in the newly elected leadership, saying he believes they will continue to grow the party in the Alfred Nzo region.
