KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi could be heading for one of the country’s most powerful crime-fighting positions, with a proposal now before Cabinet for him to lead the Hawks.
Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has submitted a memorandum seeking Cabinet approval for Mkhwanazi’s appointment as the national head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), known as the Hawks.
The proposed appointment could place Mkhwanazi at the helm of the unit responsible for investigating serious organised crime, corruption and other priority offences.
However, the appointment is not yet final. Cabinet must first consider the proposal, and the process must proceed in accordance with the South African Police Service Act.
Mkhwanazi has become one of the country’s most prominent policing figures following his explosive allegations in 2025 about alleged criminal infiltration and political interference within the criminal justice system. His claims contributed to the establishment of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and a parliamentary investigation.
