ANC Women’s League calls for Mantashe to apologise over remarks to Journalist

The ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) has called on ANC National Chairperson Gwede Mantashe to publicly apologise following his remarks to a Newsroom Afrika journalist who questioned him about allegations of sex-for-jobs practices.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, Mantashe said he did not want to be drawn into the matter.

“Don’t involve me in issues of asking for a vagina. This person asked for his vagina from a person that he encountered. This can’t be an ANC issue,” Mantashe said.

The ANCWL condemned the remarks, describing them as inappropriate and inconsistent with the party’s commitment to non-sexism, equality and respect for women.

The league called on Mantashe to apologise to both the journalist and the public. It also urged the ANC leadership to reprimand him and subject him to organisational disciplinary action, citing what it described as repeated insults and attacks on women.

The ANCWL further rejected the use of Mantashe’s age to excuse his conduct, saying senior leaders should uphold the organisation’s values and serve as role models.
