A 48-year-old man has been released by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Tlokoeng, Eastern Cape, after being questioned in connection with the murder and alleged rape of his 68-year-old mother at Zimpofu village last week.
According to Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, the man was initially taken into police custody after preliminary investigations linked him to the incident. However, the matter was not enrolled in court at that stage due to insufficient corroborating evidence.
Gantana said a confession on its own was not considered sufficient to secure a successful prosecution, prompting investigators to continue gathering additional evidence.
The victim, identified as 68-year-old Vinah Nontsikelelo Dlaza, was discovered by her grandchildren when they returned from school. She was found lying on her bed with a pillow covering her face.
Neighbours responded after hearing the children’s screams and alerted the police.
“Upon arrival at the scene, members of the SAPS, together with relevant stakeholders, commenced with investigations,” said Gantana.
Preliminary information led investigators to the 48-year-old man, who was located, questioned and subsequently taken into police custody on allegations of murder and rape.
Police have since intensified their investigation, with the focus now on obtaining corroborating evidence that could strengthen the case.
DNA samples have been submitted for forensic analysis, while the post-mortem report is still outstanding. The report is expected to establish whether the alleged rape occurred.
Police said the only eyewitness to the incident is a three-year-old child who is currently receiving medical treatment after being traumatised by the incident.
The child’s statement will be obtained with the assistance of social workers, according to Gantana.
The case has been temporarily postponed pending the outcome of the forensic examinations and the obtaining of the child’s statement. Once the outstanding evidence has been secured, police intend to reinstate the matter and have it enrolled in court.
“The SAPS is committed to ensuring that justice is served and that the suspect faces the full might of the law,” said Gantana.
Police have appealed to members of the community to remain calm and allow investigators to complete their work.

The suspect has not been convicted of any offence. The allegations remain subject to investigation and due legal process.
