A 44-year-old man is expected to appear in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court today for the alleged murder of his 37-year-old girlfriend, a security officer at the University of Limpopo.
The woman was allegedly attacked with a hammer at the university campus on Saturday evening while she was on duty. She was rushed to Mankweng Hospital but later died from her injuries.
Police said the suspect initially attempted to flee but was chased and apprehended by students who witnessed the attack.
He was initially arrested for attempted murder, but the charge was changed to murder following the victim’s death.
Police have recovered the alleged weapon, while the motive remains unknown. Domestic violence has not been ruled out.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers condemned the killing and called for an end to violence against women.
