University of the Witwatersrand (Wits University)has dismissed claims that 98% of its employees are foreign nationals, saying international staff make up only 9% of its workforce.
The university said the claim that qualified South Africans are being overlooked for jobs is inaccurate.
Wits defended its internationalisation strategy, saying it seeks to balance the development of local talent with access to global expertise.
The university said international employees play an important role in strengthening teaching, research and academic collaboration, while the institution remains committed to developing South African talent.
The controversy comes amid South Africa’s persistently high unemployment rate, which has intensified concerns about employment opportunities for local professionals.
Wits said the 98% figure does not accurately reflect the composition of its workforce and urged the public to rely on verified information when discussing employment at the university.
