eThekwini implements load reduction amid KZN cold snap

eThekwini Municipality has implemented load reduction in parts of the city after one of the two electricity supply circuits feeding the Kloof Substation failed.

The municipality said rising electricity demand amid the cold weather has placed additional pressure on the remaining circuit, increasing the risk of transformer overload.

About 2MW will be shed at a time, with load reduction rotated every two hours until 10pm on Wednesday. The measures could continue on Thursday, depending on network conditions and repair progress.

Affected areas include Chelmsfordville, Forest Hills, Kloof, Krantzkloof and Padfield Park.

Municipal teams are investigating the fault and repairing the affected circuit, while also assessing whether electricity can be redirected to other substations to ease pressure on the Kloof network.

The disruption comes as KwaZulu-Natal experiences severe winter weather, with snowfall already causing road closures and transport disruptions in parts of the province.
