Two men to appear in court over illegal firearms in OR Tambo

Two men are expected to appear in their respective Magistrates’ Courts today after being arrested in separate operations in the OR Tambo District for allegedly possessing illegal firearms and ammunition.

The suspects, aged 24 and 65, were arrested in Ngqeleni and Port St Johns respectively.

The 24-year-old was arrested at his homestead in Nomcamba locality, Zinduneni Administrative Area, Ngqeleni, at about 3am on Sunday.

Police recovered a revolver and 10 rounds of live ammunition after acting on information received. The suspect allegedly had no licence to possess the firearm.

In a separate operation in Bhuje locality, Majola, Port St Johns, a 65-year-old man was arrested at about 6am on Monday.

Majola police, detectives and Crime Prevention members recovered three rifles, three magazines, 22 rifle rounds and a 9mm pistol with a magazine.

Police said the firearms had erased serial numbers and that the suspect could not provide documentation authorising him to possess them.

Acting OR Tambo District Commissioner Brigadier Vukile Ntuli commended the officers involved in the operations, saying their efforts in combating the proliferation of unlicensed firearms in the district were appreciated.
