Identity leak sparks criminal probe at Madlanga Commission

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has taken swift action after the identity of a witness who testified anonymously was allegedly disclosed, announcing that a criminal case will be opened over the apparent breach.

The commission, which is investigating allegations of criminal infiltration, political interference and corruption within South Africa’s police, prosecution and intelligence agencies, views the disclosure as a serious threat to the integrity of its proceedings and the safety of those assisting the inquiry.

The witness, whose identity remains officially undisclosed, is believed to be attached to a specialised law enforcement unit, with reports suggesting links to either the Gauteng Counterintelligence Team or the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team.

The alleged leak comes as the commission prepares to decide whether the witness should continue giving evidence behind closed doors. The ruling will determine whether the public and media will be excluded from portions of the hearings to safeguard both the witness and the sensitive evidence expected to be presented.
