Seven people have died in a devastating crash involving two minibus taxis and an articulated truck on the N4 between Ngodwana and Mbombela in Mpumalanga.
Provincial Community Safety, Security and Liaison Department spokesperson Moeti Mmusi confirmed the incident, saying one of the minibus taxis, which was towing a trailer, was travelling towards Mbombela when the driver lost control and crashed into an articulated truck.
The impact caused the taxi to burst into flames, trapping three occupants inside. They were burned beyond recognition.
A second minibus taxi then collided with the truck, killing four more people at the scene and bringing the death toll to seven.
“Three occupants of one of the minibuses were burned beyond recognition,” Mmusi said, adding that the department would provide further updates as more information becomes available.
Emergency services responded to the scene, where rescue teams assisted the injured and worked to clear the wreckage. The identities of the deceased have not yet been released pending the notification of their next of kin.
The crash caused significant traffic disruptions along the N4 as authorities investigated the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Police have opened an investigation into the cause of the fatal crash, while motorists have been urged to exercise caution when travelling on the route.
