The Kouga Municipality has issued an urgent warning to residents living along the Kromme River to evacuate immediately and move to higher ground as rapidly rising water levels pose a serious flood risk.
According to the municipality, a significant volume of water is flowing down the river following increased spillway releases from the Impofu Dam. Authorities warned that river levels are expected to rise quickly and conditions could become extremely dangerous within a short period.
The municipality has urged residents not to delay their evacuation or wait for conditions to worsen. People living in affected areas are advised to gather essential belongings, secure their properties where possible, and relocate to a safe location immediately.
Residents who do not have alternative accommodation can make their way to the St Francis Bay Community Hall, which has been opened as a temporary place of safety.
Emergency services are closely monitoring the situation and remain on high alert as the increased water flow moves downstream. The municipality said the safety of residents remains the highest priority and urged communities to heed all warnings and evacuation instructions.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated through official municipal communication channels and avoid riverbanks, flooded areas and low-lying roads as conditions continue to develop.
