SAPS deploys elite task team to probe Woolworths store explosions

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has intensified its investigation into the explosions that occurred at Woolworths stores in Gauteng and the Free State, deploying a National Forensic Task Team and Crime Intelligence experts to determine the cause and motive behind the incidents.

Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane confirmed that specialist investigators have been assigned to the case following explosive device detonations at Woolworths stores located at Menlyn Park Shopping Centre in Pretoria and Preller Square Shopping Centre in Bloemfontein last week.

According to SAPS, investigations remain at an early stage, with detectives exploring all possible motives.

“Investigations are currently at a very early stage and all possible motives are being explored by investigators,” SAPS said in a statement.

Police cautioned against speculation, stressing that it would be premature to classify the incidents as acts of terrorism at this stage.

“At this stage, it would be premature to classify the incidents as acts of terrorism. SAPS remains alert and will continue to assess the situation as investigations unfold,” the statement added.

Authorities said any additional security measures, including increased monitoring around affected or related premises, will be guided by ongoing investigations and threat assessments.

The police have urged members of the public to remain calm and allow investigators the necessary space to conduct their work.

The explosions at the two shopping centres have raised concerns among shoppers and businesses, with investigators now working to establish who was responsible and whether the incidents are linked.

No further details have been released as investigations continue.
