Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula admits ANC abused its majority in Phala Phala matter

Former Speaker of the National Assembly, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, has admitted that the African National Congress abused its parliamentary majority when dealing with the Phala Phala issue.

Mapisa-Nqakula was speaking during an interview with Mbuyiseni Ndlozi on the African Renaissance Podcast.

She accused ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula of instructing party members not to vote in favour of the report.

“Our Secretary-General of the organisation, Comrade Mbalula, then came to caucus and said, ‘Well, today is the day. It’s D-Day. We are going to discuss the report and we are going to vote, but I want to say to the caucus of the ANC: none of you will vote in favour of the report,’” said Mapisa-Nqakula.

She said the ANC abused its majority in Parliament.

“I think we did. I hate to say this, but we did, and I am saying this with all sincerity and honesty. It was not necessary to walk into a caucus and say, ‘You will do what I want you to do.’ We could have been more mature,” she said.

“Our democracy is maturing. The Constitutional Court has ruled. I hang my head in shame because we could have done better,” Mapisa-Nqakula concluded.
