A 47-year-old man has been sentenced to an effective 20 years in prison for the murder of his mother in Dalisile in the Eastern Cape.
Samuel Ndesi was sentenced in the Mthatha High Court on Friday, 8 May 2026, after he was convicted of murdering his 68-year-old mother, Retuie Ndesi.
The court heard that on 25 July 2025, Ndesi arrived at the family homestead in Caca Location, Mhlontlo, while relatives were preparing for a traditional ceremony. Allegedly under the influence of alcohol, he accused his mother of bewitching him and other family members before stabbing her to death.
Ndesi was sentenced to eight years imprisonment for imputing witchcraft under the Witchcraft Suppression Act and 20 years for murder. The sentences will run concurrently, resulting in an effective 20-year prison term. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
Chris Hani District Commissioner Rudolph Adolph welcomed the sentence, saying it would serve as a deterrent to crimes committed against elderly people.
