The Umzimvubu Local Municipality, through the Office of the Speaker, hosted a two-day Traditional Leaders’ Summit from 23–24 April 2026, bringing together representatives from all nine traditional councils. The summit focused on strengthening cooperation between traditional leadership and government to address development challenges in rural communities.
Executive Mayor of Alfred Nzo District Municipality, Cllr Tsileng Sobuthongo, delivered the keynote address, emphasising that effective service delivery and sustainable development depend on strong partnerships, mutual respect, and shared accountability between municipalities and traditional leaders.
The summit was attended by key stakeholders, including Nkosi Jongilanga Sigcau, Chairperson of the Alfred Nzo Local House of Traditional Leaders, municipal councillors, senior officials, and representatives from government departments such as SAPS, COGTA, Home Affairs, Land Reform, and the Municipal Demarcation Board.
Discussions covered critical issues including land and rural development, ward delimitation, municipal boundaries, and stock theft. The summit also addressed preparations for the 2026 Winter Initiation Season, highlighting the importance of safety, coordination, and cultural preservation.
Structured as a working session, the summit encouraged open dialogue and practical solutions, reinforcing a shared commitment to improving service delivery and community development. Outcomes from the summit will be formalised in a report and implemented through Intergovernmental Relations structures and Integrated Development Plan forums to ensure accountability and progress.
The summit marked an important step toward stronger partnerships, improved governance, and inclusive development across Umzimvubu.
