The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that the investigation into the murder of ANC Ward 17 councillor Sibusiso Khwela has been handed over to the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).
Khwela was shot and killed in Klaarwater, Durban, in an incident that has sparked concern over political violence in the province.
SAPS said the decision to transfer the case to the specialised unit was made because of the Political Killings Task Team’s strong track record in investigating and successfully resolving politically motivated murders.
Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane has expressed full confidence in the team’s expertise, saying she believes the investigators are well-equipped to uncover those responsible for the killing.
