CPUT security official in ICU after student protests

A senior security official at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) remains in ICU after suffering a head injury during student protests over financial concerns.

The protests were sparked by issues including historical debt, financial exclusion and residence fees, as well as objections to CPUT’s proposed 2027 Financial Recovery Plan, which included a possible R7,000 upfront registration payment.

CPUT withdrew the draft plan on Wednesday night to allow for further consultation, with the university expecting the move to end the protests.

By Thursday, campuses were largely calm, with online classes continuing while safety inspections were conducted.

Police reported incidents of violence in Wellington, Bellville and central Cape Town. In Bellville, a building was set alight and a security guard was injured. Two men, aged 19 and 21, were arrested for public violence.

Police remain deployed in affected areas, while protesters have been warned that those breaking the law will be held accountable.
