The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gqeberha has launched a full-scale investigation following a violent carjacking and kidnapping that ended in the discovery of three murdered men in Bethelsdorp.
The incident began on Sunday evening, 26 April 2026, when five armed suspects allegedly ambushed a white Mazda 323 in Vukukhanye Street, Kwanobuhle. The victims were reportedly robbed of money and cellphones before the suspects drove off with three occupants still inside the vehicle.
The car was later found abandoned in Algoa Road, raising fears for the missing occupants.
Those fears were confirmed on Monday morning when police discovered the bodies of three men in bushes near Old Uitenhage Road in Salt Lake, Bethelsdorp. The victims had sustained gunshot wounds and were identified as the same individuals taken during the hijacking.
Police say the attack appears to have escalated from robbery to execution-style killings, although the motive remains under investigation.
