The bail application of suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya continues in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court, with the State opposing his release from custody.
Sibiya is facing charges including rape, human trafficking and sexual grooming following his arrest in September.
The State has raised concerns about the potential interference with witnesses should Sibiya be released on bail.
Sibiya has denied the allegations against him. During earlier proceedings, he told the court that his sexual encounter with an 18-year-old woman was consensual and denied raping her.
The bail hearing was previously postponed to allow the prosecution additional time to consider documents submitted by Sibiya’s defence team.
Sibiya’s court case comes as he also faces an internal SAPS disciplinary process linked to allegations that have emerged during the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
His disciplinary hearing is scheduled to continue on 5 October.
