Senior EMPD officer, four others appear in court over Mbense Murder

Suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi and four co-accused are expected to appear in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court on Thursday in connection with the alleged 2022 murder of businessman Emmanuel Mbense.

The five suspects were arrested by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) following a lengthy investigation into Mbense’s death. They are expected to face charges including murder and defeating the ends of justice.

Mbense was allegedly kidnapped, tortured and murdered before his body was dumped in the Spaarwater Dam in Brakpan in April 2022. The case gained renewed attention after an IPID investigator testified before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, alleging that DNA evidence linked some of the suspects to the crime.

Mkhwanazi is also facing separate criminal charges, including allegations of fraud, corruption and the theft of precious stones, which he has denied.
