Ramaphosa sends condolences after 44 die in Zimbabwe ferry tragedy

President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his condolences to the Government and people of Zimbabwe following a ferry tragedy on Lake Kariba that claimed 44 lives.

The ferry capsized on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, resulting in the deaths of 44 people.

Ramaphosa extended his sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives, as well as to survivors of the tragedy.

He also expressed solidarity with families still awaiting the outcome of ongoing search and rescue operations.

“As South Africans, we stand in solidarity today with the nation of Zimbabwe as we mourn this extensive loss of life,” Ramaphosa said.

“We wish survivors a speedy recovery and we pay tribute to the emergency services who are working tirelessly to support and bring closure to affected families and communities.”
