A 49-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl in Jouberton.
The Klerksdorp Regional Court heard that the incident happened on Thursday, 8 February 2024, at about 6.30pm.
The matter was reported to police after the child disclosed that she had been sexually assaulted by the accused, Sipho Mazatsana.
Mazatsana was arrested on 11 February 2024 and remained in custody after being denied bail.
The case was investigated by Sergeant Martha Meisie Chosi of the Klerksdorp Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
After a trial, Mazatsana was found guilty and sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment on Tuesday, 11 August 2026.
North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Adams welcomed the sentence and praised Sergeant Chosi for her thorough investigation, which contributed to securing the conviction.
Adams said the South African Police Service remains committed to protecting children and ensuring that perpetrators of sexual offences against vulnerable victims are held accountable.
He also urged investigators to continue pursuing cases involving crimes against children to ensure that justice is served.
