Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has been granted leave to appeal by the Eastern Cape High Court in his defamation case against EFF leader Julius Malema.
The case stems from remarks made by Malema concerning allegations that Mabuyane fraudulently obtained a master’s degree from the University of Fort Hare. Mabuyane has denied the allegations and approached the court, seeking an order declaring Malema’s statements defamatory and unlawful.
The Eastern Cape High Court previously dismissed Mabuyane’s urgent application against Malema, a ruling that was welcomed by the EFF.
Mabuyane has now been granted leave to challenge that judgment before a higher court.
The dispute follows comments made by Malema outside the KuGompo Regional Court in April, where he made allegations about Mabuyane’s academic qualifications.
Mabuyane’s spokesperson previously described the allegations as false and baseless.
