Police have opened an inquest docket following a fatal shootout between National Intervention Unit (NIU) officers and three-armed suspects in Xhorha.
According to police spokesperson Siphokazi Mawisa, police received operational intelligence on Thursday, 13 August 2026, regarding suspected extortionists travelling in a white Toyota Fortuner.
“The vehicle, which matched the description, was spotted near a scrapyard at about 17:00.
Two of the three occupants reportedly got out of the vehicle and opened fire on the police. Officers returned fire, fatally wounding all three male suspects.
Two firearms were recovered at the scene,” she said.
Police are also investigating additional charges, including attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
