Gift of the Givers is preparing to assist in the search for a South African couple reported missing following devastating floods in Nepal.
The humanitarian organisation received a request for assistance from the couple’s daughter and confirmed with their tour operator that another South African couple and several international tourists are also missing.
Gift of the Givers founder Dr Imtiaz Sooliman said widespread destruction has left roads inaccessible, making helicopter surveillance the only viable option.
However, high water levels are currently preventing helicopters from landing, while rescue operations are also being delayed by the risk of a nearby dam collapsing.
The organisation has 11 search-and-rescue specialists, four SAPS dog handlers and four trained dogs on standby.
The team is coordinating with Nepalese authorities but will only deploy once the Nepalese government formally requests international assistance.
