Four South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) officials have been arrested in connection with an alleged R4.9 million social grants fraud scheme.
The officials were arrested in Gauteng following an investigation into the alleged unlawful processing and approval of social grants in contravention of the Social Assistance Act. One suspect was arrested at a workshop in Heidelberg, while the remaining three were apprehended in Soshanguve.
Acting Gauteng Regional Executive Manager Godfrey Mohlamonyane welcomed the arrests, saying they demonstrate SASSA’s commitment to rooting out fraud and corruption within the agency.
“These arrests reaffirm our zero-tolerance approach to fraud and corruption and our commitment to protecting public funds,” said Mohlamonyane.
