Bitou Deputy Mayor Nokuzola Kolwapi’s case postponed to 26 August

The case against Bitou Municipality Deputy Mayor Nokuzola Kolwapi has been postponed to 26 August 2026.

Kolwapi appeared before the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on charges of discharging a firearm in a public place and pointing a firearm.

The charges stem from a viral video that surfaced in December 2025, allegedly showing Kolwapi brandishing a 9mm firearm and firing multiple shots into the air while dancing during her son’s homecoming celebration following an initiation ritual in KwaNokuthula.

In a separate video clip, she is seen handing what is believed to be the firearm to her bodyguard as onlookers continued to gather and celebrate around her.

The videos sparked widespread public attention and prompted calls for authorities to investigate whether any provisions of the Firearms Control Act had been violated.

Kolwapi has consistently denied that the object seen in the footage was a real firearm. In a previous statement, she maintained that it was a “replica (toy gun)” and rejected allegations that she had discharged a live weapon.
