Ad hoc committee clears Mchunu of alleged cartel links in PKTT disbandment

Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations of criminal infiltration and political interference in the criminal justice system has found no evidence linking former Police Minister Senzo Mchunu to criminal cartels or criminal conduct in connection with the disbanding of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

The committee’s draft findings indicate that the evidence presented did not establish a direct link between Mchunu’s directive to disband the task team and any agreement with criminal syndicates.

Some opposition parties, including the EFF and MK Party, argued that circumstantial evidence pointed to possible links between Mchunu and individuals allegedly connected to criminal networks. The ANC and Patriotic Alliance, however, maintained that there was insufficient direct forensic, financial or digital evidence to substantiate such a connection.

The committee has also indicated that there was insufficient evidence to establish whether Mchunu had a corrupt relationship with alleged crime figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, including allegations involving political funding.
