Zimbabwean businessman Lawrence Mudzinganyama has been granted R15,000 bail following his appearance in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on an intimidation charge.
Mudzinganyama appeared in court on Thursday after he was arrested following the circulation of a video showing him allegedly threatening women during an incident at a Sandton restaurant.
The incident took place at Vlamo Restaurant in Sandton on 18 September, after the women allegedly rejected his advances. The footage subsequently went viral on social media.
Police confirmed that Mudzinganyama handed himself over at Randburg Police Station on 20 September. He was initially released on a warning to appear in court while investigators gathered statements and other evidence.
Mudzinganyama later apologised for his conduct, describing the language he used during the confrontation as unacceptable and unjustifiable.
He said he should have exercised restraint, walked away from the situation and sought assistance from the restaurant’s management.
The case has also resulted in scrutiny of Mudzinganyama’s business interests. Moriel Infrastructure Group, where he previously served as executive chairman and director, terminated its association with him following the incident.
Authorities have also been examining the company’s government contracts, while the Department of Home Affairs was asked to verify Mudzinganyama’s immigration status.
