The Wallabies stunned the Springboks 42-38 in a thrilling Test at Optus Stadium in Perth on Sunday, surviving a dramatic late comeback from South Africa.
Australia led 24-17 at half-time after Len Ikitau scored twice, while Ben Donaldson also crossed. Ryan Lonergan added four conversions and three penalties.
The Wallabies extended their advantage to 42-17 after tries from Harry Wilson and Max Jorgensen, leaving South Africa facing a huge deficit with less than 20 minutes remaining.
The Springboks then launched a remarkable fightback. A penalty try followed Harry Wilson’s yellow card, before Morne van den Berg and Ox Nche scored late tries, with Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu converting both.
Australia were reduced to just 11 players after further disciplinary action, but the Springboks could not complete the comeback.
The result handed South Africa only their second defeat of the year and extended Wallabies coach Less Kiss’s unbeaten start in charge.
