The Eastern Cape government has launched a two-week investigation into allegations of extortion and other irregularities involving some members and leaders of the Mthatha Taxi Association.
Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha, joined by OR Tambo District Municipality Acting Executive Mayor Spokazi Njisane, national and provincial SANTACO leadership, and senior officials from the Department of Transport announced the probe during an urgent meeting at the Assemblies of God Convention Centre in Mthatha on Thursday.
The meeting was convened after members of the association raised concerns about alleged misconduct within the industry.
Nqatha said the seriousness of the allegations left the department with no choice but to initiate an investigation.
“The gravity of the allegations levelled against some leaders and members of the Mthatha Taxi Association compelled me to institute an investigation into concerns raised by some members of the association,” Nqatha said.
The probe is set to run for two weeks.
