King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) Executive Mayor Cllr Nyaniso Nelani has recused himself from his municipal duties pending the finalisation of legal proceedings after appearing in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on fraud-related charges.
The municipality said the charges relate to the 2024 ANC election manifesto launch in Durban and clarified that the mayor did not appear on corruption charges, contrary to some reports.
The municipality said Nelani’s decision was taken to protect the integrity of the Office of the Executive Mayor while allowing the legal process to continue without distraction. It also assured residents that municipal services would continue uninterrupted.
“This decision to recuse myself is made in the interest of the people of KSD, the Municipality, and the integrity of the office I have been entrusted to serve. I remain confident in the legal process and will continue to cooperate fully until the matter is finalised,” said Nelani.
