At least 16 people have been killed and two others seriously injured after a bus carrying 73 South African residents overturned on the N1 near Touws River in the Western Cape during the early hours of Thursday morning.
The Western Cape Mobility Department confirmed the fatal crash, which occurred shortly before 1am, with emergency services remaining at the scene throughout the morning.
“We confirm an incident on the N1 near Touws River at approximately 12am on Thursday, where a bus transporting 73 South African residents has overturned,” said Western Cape traffic chief Maxine Bezuidenhout.
“Tragically, 16 people have lost their lives, while two others sustained serious injuries,” she added.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
