Former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana defender Siyabonga Sangweni has called on the South Africa national team to approach the 2026 FIFA World Cup with pride, discipline and responsibility, warning players not to treat the tournament as a holiday or sightseeing opportunity.
Speaking ahead of Bafana Bafana’s long-awaited return to the global stage, Sangweni stressed that representing South Africa at the World Cup must be seen as a serious duty, not an individual platform for personal glory.
He reminded the current generation that the team’s first World Cup appearance since 2010 carries huge expectations from supporters across the country. According to him, the focus must remain on teamwork, commitment, and national pride rather than distractions off the pitch.
South Africa’s preparations continue as the squad looks to build momentum and restore its reputation on the international stage, with former players like Sangweni urging discipline and unity as key ingredients for success.
Bafana Bafana will be hoping to make a strong impact when they take on the world’s best in 2026, with expectations growing among fans eager to see a competitive showing from the national side
