Three people were shot and killed in what police believe may have been a targeted attack at the Kanana informal settlement in Gugulethu on Saturday evening, 27 June 2026.
Detectives attached to the Western Cape Provincial Serious Violent Crime Unit are investigating the triple murder following the deadly shooting, which claimed the lives of two women and a young man.
According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 19:00 in NY111, Kanana, when three armed suspects allegedly arrived at a shack looking for the owner of the dwelling. The woman they were searching for was reportedly not at home at the time.
The suspects allegedly waited for her to return before opening fire on her and several other occupants inside the shack.
A 41-year-old woman, a 46-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man sustained fatal gunshot wounds and were declared dead at the scene by emergency personnel.
Several other occupants managed to flee during the attack and escaped without injury.
Police said the motive for the killings has not yet been established. However, preliminary investigations suggest the shooting may have been a targeted attack.
No arrests have been made, and detectives are pursuing all available leads as the investigation continues.
Authorities have appealed to anyone with information that could assist in identifying or locating the suspects to come forward and report it to the South African Police Service or anonymously through the Crime Stop hotline.
