The long-delayed murder trial of former ANC Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa has been set to run from 9 November to 11 December 2026 in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.
Magaqa was shot in Umzimkhulu, KwaZulu-Natal, on 13 July 2017 and died from his injuries on 4 September 2017. He was an ANC councillor at the time of the attack.
Three men — Sbonelo Myeza, Mbulelo Mpofana and Zweliphansi Stanley Skhosana — are facing charges including murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
Myeza and Mpofana are out on bail, while Skhosana remains in custody after his bail application was unsuccessful.
The case has been repeatedly delayed, including over changes in legal representation and requests for additional documents by the defence.
In May, Judge Mluleki Chithi warned the accused that the court would no longer tolerate further delays and said the matter would have to proceed.
The trial is expected to shed further light on the circumstances surrounding Magaqa’s killing, which has remained one of KwaZulu-Natal’s high-profile political assassination cases.
A fourth accused, Sibusiso Ncengwa, previously pleaded guilty to his role as a hitman and was sentenced to an effective 25 years in prison in 2025.
