Four suspects are now in police custody in connection with the murder of former world boxing champion Zolani Tete, who was fatally shot in NU 17, Mdantsane, on Friday, 21 August 2026.
The Eastern Cape SAPS confirmed that two more suspects have been arrested, bringing the total number of people in custody to four as the investigation into Tete’s killing continues.
The first suspect was arrested on Saturday, 22 August 2026, at KuGompo City, while three more suspects were apprehended on Sunday, 23 August 2026. The latest arrests were made in Mdantsane and Scenery Park.
The three suspects arrested on Sunday are aged 27, 27 and 28.
Eastern Cape SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nobuntu Gantana said police were making progress in the investigation and warned against speculation that could compromise the case.
“The SAPS is continuing to follow up on leads and more arrests are expected as the investigation unfolds. We caution the public and the media against speculation or the dissemination of unverified information, as this may compromise the investigation and the integrity of the court proceedings,” said Gantana.
Police also corrected an earlier report regarding the age of one of the suspects arrested on Sunday, confirming that the suspect is 27 years old and not 22 as previously stated.
The 22-year-old suspect arrested on Saturday has been formally charged with murder and attempted murder and is expected to appear before the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 August 2026.
The attempted murder charge relates to a 27-year-old female passenger who was wounded during the attack and remains hospitalised.
Meanwhile, a 30-year-old man who was initially apprehended on Saturday has been released and remains a potential witness in the matter.
Gantana said police would continue with their investigation while ensuring that the process is not compromised.
“Due to the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation, the SAPS is unable to disclose further details at this time. The investigating team is continuing with all necessary follow-ups,” she said.
The SAPS has commended the investigating team for their swift action and dedication in tracing and arresting suspects linked to the murder of the boxing champion.
