Deadly R555 pile-up leaves four dead and eight injured

Four people have died and eight others were injured in a devastating nine-vehicle collision on the R555 near Middelburg in Mpumalanga on Monday afternoon.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, where paramedics declared four people dead. The victims’ identities have not yet been released.

According to preliminary information, an articulated truck travelling from Middelburg towards Emalahleni allegedly lost control before crashing into one of the vehicles. The impact triggered a chain-reaction collision involving several other vehicles.

Authorities said some of the vehicles also collided with steel that had fallen from the truck onto the roadway, further contributing to the severity of the crash.

Five people sustained serious injuries, while three others suffered minor injuries. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals in Middelburg and Emalahleni, where they are receiving medical treatment.

The crash involved a total of nine vehicles, including an articulated truck, four light delivery vehicles (LDVs), one sport utility vehicle (SUV) and several other motor vehicles.

Traffic was severely disrupted as emergency personnel worked to assist the injured, clear the wreckage and reopen the road.

Law enforcement officials have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision. No arrests have been made, and authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution while travelling on the route.
